Diocese of Rockville Centre seminarian Stephen Rooney is ready to make a difference this summer. The St. John’s freshman is set to ride across country over the course of 77 days to raise money and help build affordable housing.
Rooney is going on the trip through the Bike and Build program. The journey starts on June 9th in Providence, Rhode Island and ends August 23rd in Half Moon Bay, California. Over the course of the trip, the group will have 15 build days where they help build housing.
“I could not be more excited for my adventure this summer. I get to build houses for people who cannot afford them, which sounds awesome, while seeing the country via bicycle. I know the trip will be beautiful. I am extremely excited to bike over the Catskills, Colorado Rockies, and through two national parks. There will be stunning scenes that I will never forget. Most important I am excited to have the craziest adventure ever with some remarkable people,” Rooney said about his experience.
In order to ride, each rider has to raise $4,500. To help with his fundraising Rooney is holding a number of events. One that is coming up is a Three-On-Three Basketball Tournament on May 4th. The cost will be $ 30 a team and all the proceeds will go to his effort to raise money for affordable housing. By using the game of basketball he is able to do something simple to raise money for a great cause. Rooney says he is doing this to opens people’s eyes to the affordable housing issue in the United States.
“They ask me why I am doing this. I say to raise awareness and money for affordable housing. It opens their eyes about the epidemic of affordable housing in this country. I am riding my bicycle from Providence to California, over four thousand miles this summer to raise awareness for affordable housing. Basically to make a small impact in this epidemic of affordable housing,” he commented.
By doing something as simple as riding his bike and organizing basketball tournaments. Rooney is making an impact for those in need.
