As the new school year began in September, the Catholic Ministry Team salutes all of those who have dedicated themselves to the world of Catholic education. Over the coming weeks we will be highlight individuals who have played an important role in the formation and guidance of young lives in the name of Jesus. On Long Island, New York, Kellenberg High School has shown a deep commitment to education and the Church. This month we wish to highlight the fantastic contributions of Brother Timothy Driscoll of Kellenberg High School on Long Island.
Brother Timothy Driscoll is a Marianist Brother of the Province of Meribah and has been an educator in Catholic schools for 33 years. Currently, Brother Tim is teaching at Kellenberg Memorial High School, in Uniondale, New York. At Kellenberg, he teaches art to seniors.
Brother Tim believes that it is essential to help young people grow in their faith with Jesus Christ. One way Brother Tim helps young people grow in their faith, is by attending World Youth Day. This summer Brother Tim and others from the community took 103 Marianist students, 60 from Kellenberg and 43 from Chaminade to World Youth Day, which was held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. “It is very important for young people to claim their faith and do it with other young people. In the parish it is mostly older people and families. Gathering young adult Catholics is important to affirm their faith and for them to gather with other young people,” Brother Tim said. “We had a wonderful group. The students blended well together and entered in the spirit of the pilgrimage. It was a powerful experience.” World Youth Day was held in Rio De Janeiro from July 23-28, 2013, and was attended by 3.7 million young people.
Brother Tim's ministry isn't confined to Kellenberg High School only. He is also the chaplain of St. Martin de Porres Marianist School in Uniondale. As chaplain at St. Martin de Porres Grammar School, he helps organize Masses and prayer service for the students. Brother Tim hopes that his work as chaplain will provide a positive Catholic atmosphere for the students who attend. Additionally, Brother Tim also helps with the after school program at St. Martin’s.
Prior to his work at Kellenberg and St. Martin’s, Brother Tim taught at Chaminade High School, in Mineola, New York, for over 25 years. At Chaminade, he was involved with many different activities including the National Honor Society and the Chaminade Alumni Parents Association (CAPA). Throughout the years, Brother Tim has always enjoyed using his talents as an artist to assist the schools and his students in many ways
When he is not in the schools, Brother Tim does work in the Community with the Brothers. He enjoys cooking for the Brothers. Additionally, Brother Tim serves as part of the leadership team for the Marianist Province of Meribah. Furthermore, he is also part of a group of Brothers who help promote and encourage vocations to the Marianists. Brother Tim joined the Marianists in 1976 after graduating Chaminade. “I am constantly amazed at all the ways that God has blessed me in my life as a Marianist Brother,” Brother Tim reflected. Brother Tim encourages all young people to be open to God’s call and not to be afraid to follow Christ in the religious life noting, “I have found enormous joy as a Brother. Living and praying in community, sharing in the mission of educating young people, and striving to live a life of holiness has been a tremendous challenge but an even greater grace.”
The Catholic Ministry Team salutes Brother Timothy Driscoll for all the work he has done in the name of Jesus. Brother Tim is an example of one of the great Catholic educators that we have on Long Island. He and the Marianists are great examples of ministry within the Church, and have accomplished much in showing young people the importance of a faith life and being involved in the Church on Long Island and in the world.
